Google Partners with H&M for a Data Driven Fashion Line

0

The future of fashion is probably going to take place on your phone.

H&M Group’s digital fashion line, Ivyrevel, is partnering with Google in a program called “Data_Dress.” The new project is an Android app that learns details about the user and helps design an outfit based on that data. “Data_Dress” is part of the Coded Couture project created by Ivyrevel. Data_Dress is a program that designs based on “how you live your life.”

Aleksander Subosic is the co-founder of Ivyrevel. Subosic proclaims that they are going to change fashion by taking a customer’s personality into account and design clothes based on that information. “The Data_Dress enables women around the world to order a dress made entirely for them that reflects the way they live their lives,”

“The Data_Dress enables women around the world to order a dress made entirely for them that reflects the way they live their lives,” Subosic said in a press release.

The app uses Google’s Snapshot API. Google’s Snapshot API allows for an app to monitor a user’s daily activity such as location, weather, and activity.

By downloading the Ivyrevel app and carrying the phone for a week, the app can create a fashion line catered to the user’s activity. Powered by Google’s Snapshot technology, the app can create unique outfits. Those outfits are also personalizable. Then, a user can purchase the clothing on the app.

When will Ivyrevel be available?

While the app is currently still in development, the app is currently undergoing testing by developers and the company’s co-founders including fashion blogger Kenza Zouiten. Furthermore, the app will be available later this year and is an early glimpse into the future of data, technology, and fashion.

Until then, you can check out the video about Coded Couture by Ivyrevel above.

21st Century Fox Earnings Rise Thanks to the World Series and Political Ads

0

The U.S. Presidential election and the historical World Series victory for the Chicago Cubs spelled out success for 21st Century Fox. The media company saw revenue increase by 4% to $7.68 billion according to their most recent quarterly earnings report. The earnings rise occurred thanks to the battle over the White House and rising interests in the World Series.

Profits for last quarter were up 53 cents a share, an increase from 44 cents in 2015. However, investors reaction to the quarterly earnings report was less than optimistic. Shares of Fox dropped in after-hours trading, before bouncing back.

Since it was an election year for 21st Century Fox, the number of election commercials and high ratings for live sports helped the company’s struggling film sector.

The studio was hit hard by box office flops including Assassin’s Creed, Trolls, Why Him? and Rules Don’t Apply. However, the studio benefited from the DVD sales of Matt Damon’s The Martian, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, and Deadpool.

“Our record-breaking post-season baseball run underscores the immense value of our sports programming, as well as the broader competitive advantage we have built through our other leadership positions in entertainment and news,” Executive Chairmen Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch said in a statement.

The earnings report comes the day after the Super Bowl game between the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots. The media company explained that the game would result in $500 million in advertising and sponsorship revenue. Over 100 million people watched the Super Bowl on Sunday. That said, ratings for the Super Bowl were down slightly from last year.

The company’s CEO also discussed the future of the company as the media entity focuses on moving towards online programming.

Earlier this year it was announced Fox News correspondent Megyn Kelly departed from the company and signed a deal with NBC.

But, Fox’s film industry is off to a decent start. The Georgia-filmed Oscar-nominated movie, Hidden Figures, took home $127.5 million.

Hacker Shuts Down Nearly 20% of the Dark Web

0

While Anonymous warned Donald Trump about the future of Presidency earlier this year, it appears as though the hacking group has focused their attention on the Dark Web.

According to Motherboard, a hacker who says he belongs to the hacking group Anonymous, shut down 20% of the Dark Web’s website affecting over 10,000 Tor sites. The hacker chose to attack the Dark Web hosting service, Freedom Hosting II, after learning the hosting company was allegedly hosting child pornography sites.

“Initially I didn’t want to take down FH2, just look through it,” the hacker said in an email to Motherboard. However, after he found child porn on the hosting service, he changed his mind.

“This suggests they paid for hosting and the admin knew of those sites. That’s when I decided to take it down instead,” the hacker said.

The hacker told Motherboard that the hack was not very difficult to perpetrate. The hacker reportedly only needed to have control over a website hosted on the Freedom Hosting II service. After that, the hacker modified the configuration files, initiated a password reset and gained root access.

The hacker plans on giving the information he collected during the hack to a security researcher who will deliver it to law enforcement, which could use to track down child pornography website visitors.

Earlier this year, Anonymous warned Donald Trump that he will “regret the next 4 years.” The hacking group tweeted to their 173,000 followers calling for hackers to expose information about Donald Trump.

“This isn’t the 80’s any longer, information doesn’t vanish, it is all out there. You are going to regret the next 4 years. @realDonaldTrump,” reads a tweet from @YourAnonCentral, which is a Twitter account that reportedly shares information from the hacking organization.

What is the Dark Web?

The Dark Web is the part of the Internet that is only accessible through particular types of software, codes or a particular internet configuration. It is not listed in search engines and keeps the activity of the users anonymous.

Free Hosting II is the largest hosting of websites on the Dark Web. Sarah Jamie Lewis, a Dark Web researcher, explained that Freedom Hosting II hosts nearly 20 percent of all websites on the Dark Web.

Nearly 100 Companies File Legal Brief Against Trump’s Immigration Ban

0

Yesterday, nearly 100 companies filed legal documents that go against President Trump’s immigration executive order banning individuals from “terror-prone” countries from entering the country. But the companies are not doing this because it is morally wrong. The filing illustrates that Trump’s executive order is affecting their business.

“The Order represents a significant departure from the principles of fairness and predictability that have governed the immigration system of the United States for more than fifty years,” the legal document explains. “And the Order inflicts significant harm on American business, innovation, and growth as a result.”

The brief continues by saying, “The Order makes it more difficult and expensive for U.S. companies to recruit, hire, and retain some of the world’s best employees. It disrupts ongoing business operations. And it threatens companies’ ability to attract talent, business, and investment to the United States.”

Major tech companies signed this legal order including Facebook, Google, Netflix, Twitter, PayPal, Airbnb, and among many others. But, tech companies were not the only businesses involved in this legal document. Even Levi’s and Warby Parker also filed a legal brief opposing President Trump’s immigration ban.

Donald Trump’s Executive Order

On Saturday, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco denied Trump’s administration’s request for an immediate stay of the federal judge’s temporary order that stopped important parts of immigration ban. However, the court says they will reassess the immigration ban after the government delivers more information regarding the executive order.

It is important to note that Amazon and SpaceX are not on the list. Unlike, Uber’s CEO who stepped down from Trump’s economic advisor team following a #DeleteUber backlash. Elon Musk argued that by having a dialog with Trump is the best way to accomplish his goals “to help make humanity a multi-planet civilization.”

Alibaba’s CEO Jack Ma Warns: “If trade stops, war starts.”

The CEO of Alibaba, Jack Ma, visited Australia over the weekend. During his visit down under, the second-richest man in China had a strong warning for Donald Trump and Trump’s foreign policy ideas.

Ma was in Australia celebrating the opening of a new Alibaba Australia headquarters. At the event, Jack Ma told attendees “Everybody is concerned about trade wars. If trade stops, war starts.”

According to Business Insider Australia, Jack Ma explained” Trade is about trade of values. Trade of culture.”

“We have to actively prove that trade helps people to communicate,” Ma added.

Trans-Pacific Partnership deal

Since Donald Trump started his presidential campaign, Trump has called for making trade policies that put “America first.” One of his recent actions as President of the U.S. was to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal. The TPP is a free trade agreement between several Asia-Pacific countries.

Moreover, the TPP is a free trade agreement between several Asia-Pacific countries. The TPP trade was a deal between several countries including Australia, Japan, United States, Mexico, Peru, Brunei, New Zealand, Peru, and Singapore. However, after Trump pulled out of the deal, the TPP agreement could not be ratified.

The Obama administration claimed the partnership would help increase economic growth, create new jobs, increase productivity, competition and reduce poverty.

“The result is a high-standard, ambitious, comprehensive, and balanced agreement that will promote economic growth; support the creation and retention of jobs; enhance innovation, productivity and competitiveness; raise living standards; reduce poverty in our countries; and promote transparency, good governance, and enhanced labor and environmental protections,” the Obama administration said in a statement.

It is important to note Donald Trump met with Jack Ma earlier this month. At that time, Trump praised Ma had promised to bring jobs to the United States. After a nearly hour-long meeting with Trump, Jack Ma said his plan was to create a million jobs in the United States over the next five years by helping small businesses sell their goods and services in China.

In 2012, Alibaba had over $100 billion sales. Then in 2013, the company accounted for 60% of all mail delivered in China. But by 2014, Alibaba Group accounted for 80% of the country’s online sales.

Space Exploration Changes Astronauts’ Brain

0

A new MRI study has found space exploration has the capability of changing an astronaut’s brain.

Previous studies have shown that living in space is nothing like living on planet earth. Studies have shown space causes changes in gene expression, which changes chromosome lengths and a decrease in fine motor functions.

But, a new NASA-sponsored study published in the Journal Nature Microgravity reveals spaceflight can affect the human brain. Researchers examined MRIs in a dozen astronauts who spent 14 days in space and 14 astronauts who lived on the International Space Station for six months. Scientists found changes in the brain specifically, in the gray matter sections of the brain.

Researchers took MRIs before and after spaceflight. Scientists noticed the volume of gray matter had changed. The amount of structural gray matter changes depended upon how long the astronauts were in space.

Lead author Rachael Seidler from the University of Michigan explained in a statement, “We found large regions of gray matter volume decreases, which could be related to redistribution of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in space. Gravity is not available to pull fluids down in the body, resulting in so-called puffy face in space. This may result in a shift of brain position or compression.”

Research suggests gray matter in the brain is necessary for the leg movement, which could reflect why the brain is learning to adapt to the new environment.

Researchers do not know how long-term spaceflight will have on the brain. Scientists also do not know if spaceflight causes long-term health and behavioral problems. “These intriguing findings are observed in a retrospective data set. More carefully controlled prospective studies may shed further light on these changes and their relation to behavioral performance,” the researchers concluded in the study.

NASA Twin Study

Last week, NASA researchers reported the results of their twin study. Astronaut Scott Kelly spent an entire year living on the International Space Station. Scientists discovered Kelly’s DNA, motor skills, and other bodily functions changed after he spent over 300 days in space.

Sleep Helps The Brain Form New Memories

0

Researchers discover your brain shrinks while you are asleep and help form new memories.

Scientists are always researching the power of the mind. Late last year, researchers found “pregnancy brain” may exist, the eyes look away from someone to concentrate, and traveling to Mars may cause brain damage. However, researchers have found during sleep the brain synapses are preparing to learn new information.

Sleep & Synaptic Homeostasis

Sleep is essential for the brain but, researchers report sleep brain’ synapses shrink by nearly 20%. University of Wisconsin researchers argues the shrinking of brain synapses allow for animals to prepare for the next day and allowing for the cells to become stronger and absorb new information the next day. However, without sleep, synapses undergo a process called “synaptic homeostasis,” which could force the brain to burn out, scientists explained.

Published in the Journal of Science, researchers used images of brain nerve cells and found sleep helps improve a function of the junction between nerve cells by 20%. Ultimately, the synapses can prepare for the next day, where they can grow stronger and learn new things. Scientists argue follow-up experiments are necessary and this could help explain psychiatric disorders in the brain.

Sleep and brain synapses

In 2006, Giulio Tononi and Chiara Cirelli researchers from the University of Wisconsin presented a new theory surrounding sleep. Published in the Journal of Sleep Medicineresearchers argue during sleep brain’s synapses become stronger.

“The role of sleep is to downscale synaptic strength to a baseline level that is energetically sustainable, makes efficient use of gray matter space, and is beneficial for learning and memory,” researchers explained.

“Thus, sleep is the price we have to pay for plasticity, and its goal is the homeostatic regulation of the total synaptic weight impinging on neurons.”

Individuals who experience insomnia have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. While it is a common condition, 10 to 15% of people report it being a chronic condition. Usually caused by anxiety and the use of insomnia. However, lack of sleep can affect focus, concentration and cause cardiovascular disease.

Report: Ad Rates Rise for TV Shows President Trump Watches

0

Advertisers are willing to spend more money if they know that the president is watching.

It is reasonable to believe President Trump watches television. For instance, The Hill reports Donald Trump tweeted that people who burn flags should be punished following a Fox News report on Flag burning. Moreover,  after a Fox News report that called Chelsea Manning an “ungrateful traitor,” Trump later tweeted: “Ungrateful TRAITOR Chelsea Manning…is now calling President Obama a weak leader.”

Apparently, advertising companies are paying close attention. Advertisement rates for Morning Joe on MSNBC have increased by over 200% since Trump won the election, according to PoliticoAlso, ads for shows on Fox News rose by 50 %.

“The president’s media habits are so predictable, advertisers migrate to those areas,” one ad buyer told Politico. A source close the news organization explained that instead of going through traditional means to connect with the President, businesses including a pharmaceutical company and a major bank, are buying ads on the O’Reilly show and Morning Joe because they believe they could reach the President.

Mostly, business, organizations, and individuals are using advertisements during shows they assume Donald Trump is watching in hopes they can influence the President into thinking about a particular issue or more importantly go on Twitter and tweet to his millions of followers.

This news comes after a report found that a single tweet by President Trump can hurt a brand’s reputation, according to a CNBC report. Social intelligence firm Brandwatch explained Boeing had overwhelming positive mentions on Twitter. However, after Donald Trump tweeted, “Boeing is building a brand new 747 Air Force One for future presidents, but costs are out of control, more than $4 billion. Cancel order!”, The number of negative tweets about Boeing skyrocketed. The day after the tweet, only 32% of the company’s mentions were positive, according to Brandwatch. The same phenomenon occurred with General Motors, Ford, and Carrier.

Ivanka Trump’s Fashion Line Responds to Being Dropped from Nordstrom

0

A rep for Ivanka Trump’s brand said their business is still growing, despite boycotts and getting dropped by Nordstrom.

According to a statement released to Business Insider, Rosemary K. Young, Ivanka Trump‘s senior director of marketing argued, “The Ivanka Trump brand continues to expand across categories and distribution with increased customer support, leading us to experience significant year-over-year revenue growth in 2016.”

“We believe that the strength of a brand is measured not only by the profits it generates but the integrity it maintains.”

Young adds, “The women behind the brand represent a diverse group of professionals and we are proud to say that the Ivanka Trump brand continues to embody the principles upon which it was founded. It is a company built to inspire women with solution-oriented offerings, created to celebrate and service the many aspects of their lives.”

Earlier this week, Nordstrom announced that the company would no longer carry the Ivanka Trump brand following weak sales.

“Each year we cut about 10% [of brands] and refresh our assortment with about the same amount,” the statement said. “In this case, based on the brand’s performance we’ve decided not to buy it for this season,” a Nordstrom representative told Bloomberg.

Meanwhile, Neiman Marcus may also be pulling Ivanka Trump’s brand from their stores. Racked reports the company is no longer selling the clothing line on the Neiman Marcus website.

As for Ivanka Trump, in a Facebook post, the daughter of the President of the United States said she plans to take some time to focus on her three young children and their new home. CNN reports that Ivanka has also stepped away from managing her company.

However, a growing boycott is brewing against Trump products. The #GrabYourWallet movement lists over 60 different companies anti-Trump supporters should boycott. These companies include Walmart, TJ Maxx, Bloomingdales and LL Bean.

Misophonia: Why Certain Sounds Drive People Crazy

0

Do you hate when people make loud noises when they eat? Does the sound of a crying baby drive you mad? Well, you may have an undiagnosed brain deformity called misophonia.

First named in sixteen years ago, misophonia affects people who dislike the sounds of eating, chewing, and loud breathing. Misophonia typically affects people ages 19 and older. The only form of treatment includes lifestyle changes such as using sound proof devices such as “noise-free” headphones. Individuals with misophonia can become upset or even scared after hearing “trigger” sounds.

What is Misophonia?

Researchers at the United Kingdom’s Newcastle University has shown misophonia occurs due to abnormalities in the brain’s frontal lobe. Published in the journal Current Biology, scientists report brain scans of misophonia patients altered their brain activity when they heard certain sounds. Researchers revealed that people with misophonia listen to a “trigger” sound causes an emotional and physiological response including, increased heart rate.

Essentially, the connections in the frontal part of the brain become excited in people with the abnormality. The frontal lobe is responsible for suppressing abnormal reactions to sounds. However, in individuals with misophonia frontal parts of the brain become excited instead of subdued.

Newcastle University Professor of Cognitive Neurology, Tim Griffiths said, “I hope this will reassure sufferers. I was part of the skeptical community myself until we saw patients in the clinic and understood how strikingly similar the features are.”

Griffiths added, “We now have evidence to establish the basis for the disorder through the differences in brain control mechanism in misophonia. This will suggest therapeutic manipulations and encourage a search for similar mechanisms in other conditions associated with abnormal emotional reactions.”

Despite this research, Misophonia is not currently classified as a type of condition, and the DSM-IV does not list misophonia as a disease.
